Time Magazine Cooling Covers in the mid 1970's.
I love this article, The Cooling World from Newsweek, April 28th, 1975.
You can find the PDF of the article here, and the text which is readable here. Did you ever hear the saying when you see all the magazine covers writing the Bull or Bear market is here to stay, it is time to do the opposite? (trust me, this doesn't always work). There were no satellite measuring temperatures in 1975, unfortunately we have to rely on what we know are the "corrupted" data from the Hadley CRU climate center in East Anglia. Here is their global data from 1940 to 1985. You can see there was a slight cooling from 1940 to 1975 and then, right after this article was written the temperatures took an upward trajectory. Funny, just when we think we are so smart and have life figured out, the opposite happens. Hasn't that happened to all of us? We hope we can live and learn. Will we?Where do climate scientists go to learn to write? We are very lucky to have real, honest to good scientists around to inform us. You have to wonder when you read the article, are they informing us or scaring us? Read the nuggets of scientistspeak from the article and see how it compares to what we are fed today.
- There are ominous signs that the Earth’s weather patterns have begun to change dramatically and that these changes may portend a drastic decline in food production
- with serious political implications for just about every nation on Earth.
- evidence in support of these predictions has now begun to accumulate so massively
- Last April, in the most devastating outbreak of tornadoes ever recorded
- they are almost unanimous in the view that the trend will reduce agricultural productivity for the rest of the century
- the relatively small changes in temperature and sunshine can be highly misleading.
- causes an increase in extremes of local weather such as droughts, floods, extended dry spells, long freezes, delayed monsoons and even local temperature increases
- Climatologists are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climatic change, or even to allay its effects.
- the more spectacular solutions proposed, such as melting the Arctic ice cap by covering it with black soot or diverting arctic rivers
- But the scientists see few signs that government leaders anywhere are even prepared to take the simple measures
- The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality.
Doesn't this sound like our modern day climate scientists. So global cooling will cause tornadoes, droughts, floods, and even heat spells - WOW - same as global warming! They want to cover the arctic with soot (LOL!). And of course they are mad that the politicians don't understand the gravity of the situation. These scientists are from NOAA so we can trust them, they are experts.
I just talked to a man who complained about his ravaged 401K pension. Of course in the late 1990's, everyone couldn't rush fast enough to place their life savings in the stock market because it looked like such a sure thing. Everyone knew it was the right thing to do. The experts had it all figured out.
In 1998 after over 20 years of global warming, the world stopped warming and the temperatures have leveled off. Where do we go from here? I don't think anyone knows, but I don't think CO2 is the culprit.

Here is a graph I plotted using satellite temperature data from 1975 to the present. You can see the scientists were completely wrong. Just when they recommended covering the arctic in soot the temperatures increased steeply. Then, in 2001, the United Nations Dopenhagen IPCC scientists, made predictions that temperature would steadily and smoothly continue to increase. But for the past 12 years, since 1998, you can see that world temperature, as measured by satellite, has decreased.
